MFL – SPANISH
The language offered at Garston Church of England Primary School is Spanish, and we provide age-appropriate learning opportunities.
Aims and objectives:
The aims of Primary Languages teaching at Gartson Church of England are to:
- Foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to other languages in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils.
- Stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it.
- Support privacy and literacy, and in particular develop speaking and listening skills.
- Help children develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences.
- Lay the foundations for future language study by pupils.
- Provide an added perspective on first language teaching and learning.
- Give an extra dimension to teaching and learning across the curriculum.
INTENT
We believe that learning a foreign language is best done under the guidance of a teacher with a high level of spoken proficiency. Our schools use the services of the language team at School Improvement Liverpool (SIL), who provide trained language teachers for a scheduled weekly lesson. Apart from teaching expertise, SIL offers curriculum materials and support for follow-up work and assessment.
IMPLEMENTATION
To improve the curriculum materials provided by SIL, we have collated their school materials and had them professionally printed. These workbooks are used by pupils within lessons, with teachers also using a copy to develop their own understanding and to annotate, in order to support the language teacher in keeping track of pupils’ engagement and development. Each half-term, class teachers and MFL teachers meet to jointly assess pupil progress and plan any consolidation that is needed.
